Perhaps it's because I'm such a huge fan of Karen Marie Moning's Fever (and Dani O'Malley) series that made my disappointment with this novel so keen. It's not the similarities between the two series which bother me, those are fine (she comes to town to investigate the mysterious death of her sister, discovers there are otherworldly creatures existing alongside humans, meets a sexy bad boy who may not have her best interests at heart, is pursued by a royal creature who can make women fall to his feet in sexual abandon...like I said, the similarities are striking).
But it's the differences that ruined the story for me. This books is full of tired romance tropes and whereas Moning's Jericho Barrons is mysterious, Hart is an open book. He isn't very articulate with the heroine but the author has the reader inside his head and there he's as chatty as a high school girl with her first crush. Okay, maybe I'm exaggerating but that's the way it felt. The romance felt tired.
If you expect a rather predictable romance set in a dark, unusual world then this may be the book for you.
