Heaven is one of V.C. Andrews' original works (as opposed to the later work done by her ghostwriter). It tells the story of Heaven Casteel, a young girl living in the mountains of West Virginia, who is decidedly smarter than the other hill folk who live there.

In typical Andrews fashion, Heaven uncovers secrets about how long-dead mother, is uprooted from her family, and moved to Atlanta with a new adoptive family, along the way pursuing her dreams and uncovering dark family secrets. This is the first in a series of five books.

Although this isn't my favorite series (since it was later finished by the Ghostwriter), Heaven does stand out in the Casteel series and is an interesting book since it takes place in several different locations.

Wow. V.C. Andrews can really write a story. This is only the second Andrews book I've read but I've never read anything quite like them. Sometimes the writing is a bit juvenile but she can really tell a story. I love that while her stories may be a bit out there and extreme, she makes you care about the characters.

Of all the folks in the mountain shacks, the Casteels were the lowest -- the scum of the hills.
Heaven Leigh Casteel was the prettiest, smartest girl in the backwoods, despite her ragged clothes and dirty face...despite a father meaner than ten vipers...despite her weary stepmother, who worked her like a mule. For her brother Tom and the little ones, Heaven clung to her pride and her hopes. Someday they'd get away and show the world that they were decent, fine and talented -- worthy of love and respect.

Then Heaven's stepmother ran off, and her wicked, greedy father had a scheme -- a vicious scheme that threatened to destroy the precious dream of Heaven and the children forever!

Pretty good first novel in a series. After this book, when others begin writing under the author's name(she died), it gets tedious. However this one is really enjoyable.

This is probably the best V.C. Andrews book that I have read. Easy to keep up with the storyline and still not knowing what was going to happen next. Recommend it to all V.C. Andrews fans!
