The Heir and the Spare - Negligent Chaperone, Bk 1
Author: Maya Rodale
In London, under the not-so-watchful eye of her chaperone, newly-arrived American Emilia Highhart is unknowingly courted by twins -- and only one of them is the love of her life. — All of London is raving about the newly arrived American, Emilia Highhart. She has beauty, charm, wit, and a hint of the exotic. Unfortunately, grace is decidedly ...  more » one of her virtues. Staircases, doors, even floors have proven her enemies, often leaving Emilia prostrate and mortified in a pile of muslin. Nevertheless, at her first ball, her dance card soon fills with the names of highly suitable men. But Emilia's eyes are on just one man -- the one her aunt points out as the entirely unsuitable Lord Phillip...

In fact, he isn't Lord Phillip. While Phillip, the heir, goes about spending the good family's funds, his identical twin, Devon, the spare, must attend society functions as Lord Phillip -- all because of a few blasted minutes' age difference. Soon, both twins are vying for Emilia. And, under the not-so-watchful eye of Lady Palmerston, aunt and chaperone to the young lady, Emilia is unknowingly courted by two different men with the same face! But only one of them is the love of her life...

This had potential, but I was so frustrated at Emilia's constant whining and running away from issues. She'd hide out in her room constantly to avoid seeing or talking to anyone, especially Devon. And God forbid should they sit down and just try to talk or hear one anothers side of things. Or God forbid, work things out.

This was my first read from Maya Rodale. I wanted to lay it down... several times, and call it quits. It was that much of a letdown. The ending salvaged some things but there was still to much left undone between Phillip, Devon, and Emilia. For me, this was a very disappointing read.

I wondered how this was going to work without making Emilia look like an idiot. I enjoyed the big "reveal." One thing I found unnecessary; the end. *That* had to happen, really? Being the Spare worked and that didn't need to change (IMO).

This was my first read from this author and it did not disappoint. I loved the twist at the end. I found myself caring about all the characters even the brother. I went searching for and found her other books, including the book about the brother. This is good new talent who has me looking forward to her next book.
