An early example of Mr. Helm's craft, this was written because Mr. Hayes' muscial career in Europe was cut short by WWII. As a Black vocalist during the interwar years, like others before and after WWII Roland Hayes found greater opportunity in Europe. His early life on the plantation is of interest and contrasts with the modest prosperity and respect Blacks could earn in the North. He recalls high and low moments, as well as amusing incidents such as the rascally gal who invited him to take her out for supper when he first arrived in Paris. She was interested only in the fine food and soon bid him adieu, leaving his purse empty.
