Indulge in the audio version of this book for the full effect of the dialect and the times.
Mingled with the voices of the talented readers, I hear those of adults from my childhood, struggling with fear, courage, hate, love. I am an eleven-year-old, practicing the piano. The smell is furniture polish as Ruby has paused in her work to show me the right way to play (and sing) the hymn, "His Eye is on the Sparrow."
Too late to thank her now.
I thoroughly enjoyed the audio version. To hear the accents and the pauses really helped to place me in that time and place, beautifully done. I read the book but did not have the same reaction as I did listening to it. I highly recommend the audio version to be immersed.
