An uncle recently told me about a fantasy series that he read like ten years ago.  It was about a dark elf who lives underground with the other dark elves, but he and his instructor disagree with their beliefs and try to escape to the upper world.  His instructor doesn't make it, but he does and has many adventures.  My uncle said their were a lot of sorta mini-series within the whole thing.  Does anyone know what this series is?  Who is the author?  What is the first book?  Would you consider them appropriate for a young adult?  Thanks!

The Dark Elf Trilogy by R.A. Salvatore? Homeland is the first book in the series.

Hello, the Dark elf trilogy is a prequal series to the icewind dale trilogy.  there are also about seven boks that take place after the icewind dale trilogy.  They all have the same main character a dark elf ranger, all by the same author.  I would recomend reading the icewind dale trilogy first (the first book is the crystal shard), the dark elf trilogy is a better series and it takes place chronologically first, but it is told from the point of veiw of him recollecting his past.  I have read all the books in this series and only found one to be not enjoyable,  they are suitible for  a young adult reader as well.

Yep, you definitely want R.A. Salvatore's books about Drizz't. The Dark Elf Trilogy; Homeland, Exile and Sojourn are fantastic.

Ah, the Forgettable Realms.  I remember when the Icewind Dale trilogy came out in the late 80s-early 90s, every D&D player and their mother suddenly wanted to play good-aligned dark elf rangers with two-weapon fighting.  Talk about annoying...  I really enjoyed the series at the time though.

Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser would smoke Wulfgar and Drizzt any day of the week and then head back to the tavern for more boozing and wenching.
