Topic: help - trying to find a novel from the 80s or early 90s

Back in the 1980s or th eearly 90s I received a selection from a book club – I can’t even remember which book club now – that was a novel about a circus or maybe a travelling sideshow in which a married couple  gave their children toxins to induce birth defects and populate the show.  It was sort of a horror/dark comedy novel and my children, who were in elementary school at the time, remember me reading it and talking about it.  They would like to read it and I would like to reread it but I don’t know the title or author.  Can anyone help me?
