Alan Gratz does it again with another wartime novel for middle school students. Like his other books, Heroes is not only about the attack of Pearl Harbor but includes a story about two best friends (one white American and one American of Japanese descent who are the sons of Navy pilots) caught in the wake of war. It shows young readers that sometimes fear triggers unjust alienation and prejudice.
