I think Camilla Läckberg's motto is You should have seen it coming. But you didn't. If it isn't, then maybe it should be, because that's the way I feel at the end of every one of her novels.

In The Hidden Child, crime writer Erica Falck tries to solve the mystery of why her late mother's belongs might include a child's dress with what appears to be dried blood on it, along with a Nazi medal. She takes the medal to a local expert in hopes of obtaining some information but soon afterwards, he turns up dead. Could the two events be related?

Läckberg cleverly intermixes the story of Erica's inquiry with the murder investigation of her husband, Detective Patrik Hedström and his colleagues (or more correctly, his colleagues, as Hedström is on paternity leave or is supposed to be), then intertwines both with a tale from the final days of World War II that most readers will immediately realize will prove to have some bearing on current events.

The strongest aspect of Läckberg's novels indeed, a common trait among many of the Scandanavian mystery/thriller contingent is the strong emphasis on characterization, both leads and supporting. By the time you finish one of the Falck / Hedström tales, you will not only determine whodunnit BUT will also be treated to several interweaving stories involving their family and co-workers.

In short: Camilla Läckberg continues to be one of my favorite active writers.
