In HIDE OR SEEK, James Dobson, Ph.D., Associate Clinical Professor of Pediatrics, University of Southern California School of Medicine, exposes the false value system of our society and presented ten comprehensive strategies through which parents and teachers can cultivate self-esteem in every child. In this expanded and updated edition, Dobson delves further into the issues and identifies two important new concepts: teaching children to be kind and defusing the bomb of inferiority.

Together, these twelve strategies offer every parent and teacher specific instructions for:

+ protecting children from the agony of inferiority

+ compensating for the unfair value judgements which damage self-esteem

+ following actions and attitudes to build self-esteem in children from infancy onward

Each strategy is followed by an informative question-and-answer section discussing common problems which occur in the lives of children. Dr. Dobson also describes the feelings which typically motivate shyness, aggresiveness, clowning and silliness, apathy, disrespect, and overcompensation. The common thread between these varying personality patterns is often inferiority itself. We who lead and guide children must understand the impact of this inferiority if we are to respond effectively to their needs and longings. We can take solid steps by aiming toward specific objectives outlined by Dobson: teaching children to respect themselves and others; shaping the will without breaking the spirit; applying the most powerful tools for building self-esteem; avoiding overprotection and dependency; maximizing educational potential; and minimizing the disasters of low self-esteem.

HIDE OR SEEK culminates in a discussion of the values which parents should impart to their children in place of the false concepts of society. Dr. Dobson asserts that only Christian values free us from the tyranny of the self and offer dignity and respect to every human being. Parents who implement this "better way" will give their children the courage to seek the best rather than hide in fear and sorrow.
