Who are these children without a conscience? They are children who cannot trust, children who cannot love, children who will not be loved. They grow up to be charmers, con artist, amoral entrepreneurs, thieves, drug users, pathologicial liars and worst of all psychopathic killers....and they are often the product of even the best intentioned families. For every parent of a difficult child, working parents, single parents, and adoptive parents here is a book that addresses on of our society;s greatest problems. High Risk offers sobering case histories and invaluable suggestions for raising healthly children and protecting ourselves from the trust bandits who would steal our love, our money- our very lives.

This book was required reading for a class that I'm taking. I had just had my son a few weeks before I started reading it and would not recommend this time line to others. The book presents some alarming information in a sensational and loosely empirical fashion, and I found myself vulnerable to these tactics.
Outside of these personal variables, I found the book to be informative and cautionary. The authors use some questionable tactics to advance what is in my opinion a positive agenda - that of extended and better-compensated family leaves in the U.S. workplace. Sometimes, however, they go a bit overboard with the tactics. An interesting read with solid take-home message if you can tune out the alarm bells.

This is an excellent book, one that I have read before and wanted to replace. It is a MUST read for anyone even remotely considering foster care and/or adoption....and is full of interesting statistics for those who are not. This is not a "feel good" kind of book, rather Dr. Magid tells it like it is.
