Definitions. Beloved Brethben, Havtnq said thus much of those passages of scripture which are the foundation of the modern doctrine of imputed righteousness, it is time to leave mere controversy, and the showing what is not taught in the bible; and take up the more pleasing task of setting forth what God has taught us in his word. In commencing the study of any book, and more especially of an ancient author, it is most important that we should correctly understand the sense in which he employs the terms he uses. In the early stage of a language words have a very wide meaning, which, in the course of a century or two, becomes much altered, modified and limited; so that two or more new words are at last used to express the sense of one: or the old word expresses but half its former sense, and a new word, or a word formerly synonymous, the other half. Now it is three hundred years or more since some of the most important theological words were used in our bibles, so that it is has become necessary to examine and see whether we still use them in all their original force. This can only be done by searching the scriptures, as lexicographers do ancient authors, to learn the sense of words that they may construct a lexicon or dictionary for the use of those who have not the time or skill to do this for themselves. I now purpose to give the result of some searching in this very manner into the meaning of a few words found in our authorized version of the scriptures; for the full understanding of the following terms seems absolutely necessary to the right knowledge of the gospel. fl.
