As the time fixed by the provisional committee for the general meeting approached, the greatest anxiety was felt for the success of the institution, not only in London, but throughout the country. Ministers and laymen from different parts, delegated by the congregations or associations to which they belonged, or influenced by their own deep interest in the enterprise, repaired to the metropolis, to share in the proceedings, or encourage the servants of the Lord in their holy undertaking. A preliminary meeting was held on Monday evening, the 21st of September, 1795, in the large room at the Castle and Falcon, at which Sir Egerton Leigh, Bart, presided.
