The Monroe Doctrine was not invoked while the British were establishing themselves in what became British Honduras. In Mexico there remained considerable interest among the clergy and the aristocracy in a monarchical form of government (with an European prince) in the face of the anarchy of the early Mexican Republic and potential territorial inroads by Yankees.

However, rather than continuing to leave enforcement of the Doctrine to UK diplomacy, Polk revived it in 1845 and it was employed by his successors in Santo Domingo, Central America, and Mexico.
