Great news. I hope the decision lasts for a while before some wing-nut judge turns around this decision.

The judge stayed his own judgement and now says it will wait for the Iowa Supreme Court's ruling. (part of the same article first posted) So, if you weren't part of the first few couples to get wed, you missed the boat for this go-round.
But, at least, it seems there would be some sort of legal loophole, since there are a few same sex couples that are legally married. I don't think the gov't can take it away. And now it would be discrimination to not allow others that same right. Sure wish we had a lawyer in this forum to let us know what the legalities are for this.

Personally, I think the Iowa legislature will go back to the business of writing another law that will hold up. But the essential issue that will have to make its way through the courts is that each of these laws has or will be written with a specific intent to discrimiate against one segment of the population. That's as unconstitutional as it gets! Who knows how the Bush supreme court will rule but there are a couple Justices who will probably be retiring in a few years. So if people will get out and get others to vote, there could be a court that will look at the principles involved rather than the agenda. The Right survives at this point by disgusting and demoralizing people so they don't vote. The key is to get people to feel empowered and to vote again. |

Can't say I am totally shocked. Hopefully, when it goes further into the courts it will be upheld. Or at least added to a ballot and let the citizens decided one way or another for good. |

I live in Iowa, and sadly, they've paused the decision till they can take the issue to court. Even though it's a tiny step, at least it's in the right direction! |

You know, it's time for elected officials to STAND UP for GLBT rights and face the flack they get because of it. Way too many of them are weak on the issue - including most of the viable presidential candidates. I am so sick of no one standing for anything. :/ |

L - I'm with you. I wish we could find some politicians who had some backbone & understood equal rights. |

The presidential candidates are afraid of offending some group and they won't stand up for what is right. It makes me so mad I could scream. |

I'm a Iowa registered voter. I wish I were more articulate. I would like to send Gov. Culver an email letting him know that his position sucks. But, I suppose it wouldn't be appropriate to say "sucks" in an email to the Governor. I was so happy to see the news reports last week & was so proud of my state. Not so proud any more...
