It is not often that you hear about Vietnam from a women's perspective. Many boys were turned to old men in a years time. Vietnam turned young care free girls into old women long before thier time too. This book gives you a peek into the life of a nurse in a field hospital.

I became caught up in this book. It is about the innocence of a young nurse and how that innocence is shattered. It was hard to read, not for how it was written, but the horrors of the Vietnam War. I felt the author bared her soul. To relive it by telling her story was very courageous. You can imagine some of it with the writing, but there is no way to capture the the rawness of it all. My uncle was a tunnel rat. This story made me think a lot about him and what he went through. How frightened they all had to be, the ones who were drafted right out of high school and the ones like this nurse that volunteered. I thank them all.

On June 8, 1969, a patriotic, happy go lucky young nurse fresh out of basic training arrived in Vietnam to serve a year's tour of duty as a second lieutenant in the Army. It was a year that was to rob Lynda Van Devanter of her youth, patriotism, her innocence--and her future.

Fantastic book! Moving and powerful! We see how she is slowly changed from a nieve rule follower to a questioning women.
