Great book. After the darkness of the previous book I was dubious when I picked this one up - but the only reason I didn't finish it one sitting is because my husband made me go to previously arranged meetings, doctor's appointments, etc. Great characters, great writing, great plot. A 'stellar' [in all meanings of the word:] performance!

Hope's Folly is the third book in the Dock Five universe. First two books focus on hero and heroine Gabriel Ross Sullivan and Chasidah Bergren as they expose a corrupt empire and go on the run together. They are: Gabriel's Ghost & Shades of Dark.

Overall: As usual, pure escapist fun that I have come to expect from this author. Either this or Shades of Dark could be my favorite on of the Dock five series, I haven't decided yet (I liked Shades of Dark for it's dark bits and Hope's Folly for it's light ones). I was interested to see how Philip would be portrayed when he got his own book - turns out he's learned to trust his instincts over "the rules" and has become better for it. I really liked Rya's character too, possibly one of my favorite Sinclair heroines - a tall, strong-minded, amazonian woman with a penchant for guns - really liked her.

Futuristic/ Sci-Fi romance by Linnea Sinclair, follow up to Shades of Dark. Reading the others in the series would be helpful, to understand much of the action. This story features Chasidah Bergren's ex-husband, Admiral Philip Guthrie. Philip is now an Admiral for the Rebel Alliance, and commanding an antiquated, former produce hauling vessel. Rya Bennton is a member of his new crew, and the daughter of one of Phillip's deceased friends. Phillip is attracted to the gun-toting, "amo-head," security fanatic Rya. But, she's his friend's only child, and sixteen years younger than he is. And there is no time for romance, when the ship breaks down on a regular basis, there's a mole on board, and very little hope of getting to their destination. This book is probably my favorite in the series. The characters are "real" people, with insecurities that we can relate to, no one in the book is any kind of super-natural being. There is plenty of action, mystery, suspence, and the romance is stellar. Worth a credit. Can't wait to get my hands on the next in series.

While I have enjoyed all of the stories in this series (Gabriel's Ghost and Shades of Dark), this is probably my least favorite. I love the characters of Sully and Chaz and truly enjoy reading about their deepening relationship, however this book wasn't about Chaz and Sully. It was about Chaz's ex-husband Philip and Rya. While all of the books are themematically linked, they are stand alone entities.

The thing that I disliked the most about this book is that instead of giving us signifigant insights into who Rya and Philip are as individuals and as a "command" couple, the author spent too much time referencing what Chaz and Sully would have done, could have done, and did do in previous books. That drove me crazy! If Philip wanted to be with Chaz, then he should have done things differently, but he didn't, get over it. So all of the "When Chaz and I were married...." and "Chaz and Sully did....thus and such" was uncecessary and redundant.

And... what the heck was going on with all of the second guessing and insubordination amoung the junior officers. They needed to be slapped, but so did Rya and Philip. Blahhhhh... To the entire story.
