I've been a fan of Martha Grimes a long time and have read all of the Richard Jury series in order. I've loved every one that I've read until this one. It's very confusing (and also uninteresting)to me and I know the history of all the main charactors...anyone who reads this as their first time Grimes mystery will be very disappointed.... Start at the beginning of the series with "A Man With a Load of Mischief". This will catch your interest right away and get you hooked on the Richard Jury/Melrose Plant saga. Make sure to read all the Jury mysteries in order..the others are MUCH better than this one !

As always, Grimes has concocted a suspenseful tale. The book's American setting was well done, but there was more bad language than usual due to some of the characters.

Scotland Yard sleuth, Richard Jury, his assistant, the long-suffering Wiggins, and Jury's aristocratic pal, Melrose Plant, travel to Baltimore to investigate the death of a British citizen. As always, the book's title is the name of a pub--or in America, a bar.

I don't like foul language. It is often unnecessary, and doesn't really add to the enjoyment of the story.

Twelfth in the Chief Inspector Richard Jury series. In this book, Jury and Sgt. Wiggins and his friend Melrose Plant are reluctantly off to America, to investigate two different murders at the behest of two different friends, wandering into the literary world of Johns Hopkins University, Edgar Allan Poe and a football franchise for Baltimore! This was another of Grimes' weaker Jury novels; I don't know if it was the setting, if being away from the UK weakened the book or what, but it wasn't a story I enjoyed overly much aside from being glad for a visit with all the recurring characters. There were a lot of side trips away from the mystery part of the story and it wasn't, in general, very coherent nor cohesive.
