Helpful Score: 1
This book has very little of the supernatural or the spookiness I was hoping for. If you are looking for a good Victorian Gothic novel, try Uncle Silas by LeFanu instead.
It begins with the accidental disinternment of an old skull. The narrator tells us the story of the murdered person but there are a lot of side stories including a few love stories, a son trying to reclaim his family honor, and a troubled marriage. The churchyard really had nothing to do with the story.
I found the book boring at times (especially with the descriptions of dinner parties and a completely pointless duel squence) and thought there were too many characters.
