This isn't a bad book, but if you have read All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling Down House by David Giffels, there's really not much point in reading this one, because the two books are so much alike, even to the settings, that you wonder if Ruhlman and Giffels are the same person publishing basically the same book under two different names. Since the Giffels book is better written, it's the one I would recommend out of the two.
