From back cover:

Stanley Schuler agrees that "good fences make good neighbors" and tells how to choose the right barrier for your purpose whether it is to keep out intruders, insure privacy, muffle street sounds, prevent erosion, protect children and pets, mark off property lines, provide a backdrop for plants, conceal unattractive sights, serve as a windbreak, stop drifting snow, or rail off raised decks.

In his discussion of fences, Schuler considers height, construction, color, and adequacy for the job. He describes various materials that can be used in terms of strength and resistance to the elements and decay. His instructions for building fences are easily followed by the handy homeowner.

Instructions for wall building are enlivened by Schuler's enthusiasm. He conveys how gratifying it is to place stone on stone and to view the result. He discusses other types of walls such as brick, concrete block, retaining walls, and wall gardens. He includes a section on gates and gateways, stiles, and espaliers. There is a discussion of planting to beautify other fences and walls with the use of twiners and tendril-climbers, clinging vines (on unpainted walls), shrubs, climbers, and espaliers. The various possibilities are graphically illustrated with more than 170 black and white photographs.

STANLEY SCHULER is well known for his many books on gardening and home improvements including The Winter Garden, Gardening with Ease, Gardening in the East, The Complete Terrace Book, and others.
