In the 1970s and 1980s, Sardar wrote a series of pathbreaking books on Islam, science, education, and the environment of sustainable development. These include Explorations in Islamic Science (1989) and Science Values and the Environment in Islam and the West (1982).

This book brings together a selection of Sardar's earliest writings, together with some of his latest work on cultural relations. Taking as key themes Islam, science, and cultural relations, the material here is drawn from a wide range of sources and provides the ideal way in for students to want to come to grips with his thought.
