A small dog named Rocket takes a nap under a tree only to be awoken by a yellow bird. She thinks he's come for class, but he hasn't. He goes to another spot to nap, but listens to the bird read. The next day, he comes to class to hear the last half of the story.

The bird teaches Rocket the alphabet and how to build words one letter at a time. She eventually goes south for the winter. Rocket spells words out in the snow, like cold. The bird comes back in the spring and they read more books.

Why I recommend it: Learning to read is sometimes hard for children. This is a very cute story which illustrates how to get through that. The expressions on the bird and dog are very expressive.
