I enjoyed this book more than Sex and the Single Fireman. While both were written well, I liked the fact that there was history between Lara Nelson and Patrick "Psycho" Callahan II. Both grew up in the town of Loveless, Nevada. Lara in a center for sexual healing and Patrick on the family ranch. Lara and Patrick have history because Lara becomes Liam, Patrick's deaf, autistic brother, best friend. She gains Patrick's trust and respect for always sticking up for Liam at school and in the community.
Lara and Patrick meet again because of a fire in Loveless. They realize they both have an attraction and act on it. Patrick has not seen his family for years. He was kicked out of the family home because of a dirt bike accident. Patrick's father, Big Dog, is still furious with Patrick and only despises Lara more because of her Hippy Aunt and the other Goddesses. In a classic rebellion move, at least that is what Lara initially thinks, Patrick as sex over and over again with her. It is only after a serious of events, that Lara starts to see Patrick's feelings are real.
As usual, Ms. Bernard tackles social issues. This book deals with Autism, deafness, dementia. Being in adult services, I really perked up with Big Dog's description of what his shifting memory felt like. While no expert in Autism, the description of what Liam's rigid schedule and his sense of right and wrong, supported what limited research I have read. Liam's character was also great at making Patrick accept his faults and allowed him, Patrick, to forgive himself.
I also enjoyed how Lara navigates returning to Loveless. The scene with Dean Horvath was a laugh out loud moment. She was still better than him even after all the years that passed after high school. That was universal. And Lara also had some realizations of her own regarding her view of Loveless. The Goddess were no longer thought of as kooks as much as when she was younger. And due to her own actions, the town accepted her.
And the Goddess. I loved them. They were outspoken female characters that Ms. Bernard always has in her novels. Think of Sabrina's mother and Mellissa's grandmother.
There are cameo appearances of characters from the previous novels and updates. Yes, Sabrina and Roman are getting married. Mellissa is still driving Broody crazy with her reporting and Ryan is still happily married.
I still hoping that Joe-the-toe gets his own book.
A secondary love story in the book is that of Patrick's sister, Megan and another firefighter. He is of Hispanic descent and there problem with his different heritage.
I would have to say this was her second strongest book in the series, with the first being The Fireman Who Loved Me. A must read for the series.
