This study explores whether the concept of 'Citizen of the Union' espoused by the European Union offers an alternative pathway to an inclusive citizenship (Callen 1997) in Northern Ireland. The evidence indicates that there is an element of acceptance for the notion of 'Citizenship of the Union' and that respondents, while not committed to European citizenship, are nevertheless open to it as an alternative to being either British or Irish citizens.
