When Wyatt Hunt receives a text message ("How did ur mother die?"), he is forced to delve into his childhood. Since Wyatt spent his early years as a guest of Childrens Protective Services and various foster homes before being adopted by the Hunts, he has never wanted to think about his birth parents.

The message bothers Wyatt and eventually he feels he has no choice. As a private investigator, he has the skills necessary to examine his life before CPS. Because Wyatts mother died in 1970, the clues are sparse on the ground. When one of Wyatts PI associates is killed, Wyatt decides that his mothers killer is still alive and Ivan (his employee) got too close.

This is a page-turner! For every step Wyatt moves forward, it seems that he takes 2 backwards. He decides to go to Indiana where his mother was born. He thinks something in her past lead to her eventual death.

The past two books about Wyatt Hunt and his PI company always seemed back-burner interesting especially in comparison to Dismas Hardy and Abe Glitsky (my two favorite characters by John Lescroart). However, this book breathes new life into this character and makes him more appealing and human.

We now find that Wyatt has a dark past that has created his need to be perfect and his inability to commit to a woman. It is very interesting to watch him explore the part of himself that hes ignored until it is no longer an option.

John Lescroart is one of the best crime fiction writers out there. This one doesn't focus around Dismas and Abe as much of his earlier books, but still revolves around his usual cast of characters. I especially like his books because they take place in San Francisco and I grew up just outside of the city. always fun to read about a situation in an area I am familiar with.
