From an August 16th post by a book dealer (Mike's Library Administration):

Postal Regulatory Commission issued report calling for all classes of mail to eventually cover their costs plus a profit. Expect Media Mail to increase substantially over the next few years.  Magazine publishers are already squealing.

this might be a boon to ereaders. If I can't afford to buy something I want to read there is always the library which is free.

Magazines are not eligible for Media mail.  They get 2nd class rates.  I don't keep up with 2nd Class rates since they aren't available at retail, but it makes sense that if other rates will be increasing, 2nd class rates would increase also.  I'm interested to see what happens with bulk mail rates and Amazon's rates.

I've been stocking up on stamps too. I will likely buy more before January 27th too.

since most if not all stamps are now 'forever' the price is not printed on the stamp. I think many people do not know what the price of a 1st class stamp is. I know I don't know.

The current 50 cent forever stamps will be worth 55 cents January 27th. I send a lot of postcards through postcrossing. the international rate is staying at $1.15 so it will now require less stamps for me to get to the $1.15 value. I will save 10 cents a postcard so it makes a lot of sense for me to buy stamps at the cheaper price. If you don't mail much then it wouldn't make as big of impact.

I think there is only one bill a month I still mail out---my regional utilities bill. My only major PO expense is media mail for the books I send out via PBS.

Bulk mailers should have to pay more for their mailings.  99.5% of mine goes into the recycling.
