I would have loved this book when I moved into my first apartment. It is a gem.
CONTENTS
Home Basics:
"When recedorating the home, choosing colour schemes and a style to suit your taste and way of life should be fun. This section helps you make the right choices about the way you want your home to look. Once you've taken an objective look at your rooms and assessed their best features you can follow illustrated, step-by-step instructions for transforming your home in a number of ways."
That paragrapgh in itself would have been a revelation (and a puzzle) in '65.
"Choosing color schemes and style?" What a concept! Thinking such thoughts instead of simply moving in and unloading my stuff without painting, wallpapering, deciding to sign the lease based on whether the spaces in the apartment fit my lifestyle and furnishings was beyond me at that age. HGTV, where were you? I am serious when I say I wish I had had this book.
Problem Solving and Repairs:
"Taking the right action when an emergengy strikes is as important as dealing with it quickly, and in this section y ou will find all the information to help you cope with a multitude of common crises. Simple repairs on house items, replacing a broken window pane or unblocking a sink saves call specialists..."
Yep. I never even had the plunger that is included in the photo of tools at the beginning of this section.
Cleaning and Home Hints:
I'll bet the book doesn't include "patching" tiny nail holes in the walls with white toothpaste. But there are plenty of more traditional hints and helps.

That last one scares me. The last time I watched the Martha Stewart show was the episode in which she made swizzle sticks out of orange peel that she candied herself and wound around chemistry-lab glass pipettes to dry. Where did she get those things, anyway?
Don't think I don't love great tips, great cooking, and a beautiful home. I have the full-size version of this book and never will part with it. This is the 9"x7" version that can be tucked into a handy drawer or set among kitchen cookbooks - the book's recipes are lovely
The book was published in the UK where tools and equipment may differ from some in the US. All in all, however, this is a very nice and handy reference.
