This is my first Coulter book and I have mixed feelings about it. Although the mystery was well written and the romance was well written, some of the character interactions were just too phony to believe. It was a good book, don't get me wrong. I'm just glad I didn't pay to read it! For free, it's worth the read. I'll give it 4 stars.

Just couldn't get into this one, and I loved the FBI series and some of her older historical novels.

I love all Cahterine Coulter books!

Rafaella Holland, a Pulitzer Prize winner, now a journalist for the Boston Tribune, discovers from her comatose mother's journals that her "real" father is Dominick Giovanni, a wealthy, very powerful arms dealer who lives and runs his operations from his own private island compound in the Caribbean. She wants revenge for what he did to her mother. She wants to gather enough proof to send him to prison for the rest of his miserable life.
Marcus Devlin manages the resort on Giovanni's Island, private playground for the wealthy and powerful. He's very good at what he does, but Rafaella wonders if he's really what he seems,
Then someone tries to kill Dominick Giovanni. Who
Then someone tries to kill Rafaella and Marcus. Why?
As Rafaella and Marcus grow closer, events threaten to spin out of control when their small world on Giovanni's Island starts to implode.

It took me awhile to get into this book, but then I thought "hey, it's not so bad". As I went on, it became more and more convoluted until it was a mass of intersecting lines that threatened to turn into a knot. Everyone and everything had a secret until the miasma threatened to drown you. Of course, everything is resolved quite nicely and neatly in the last 10 pages, but that previously-mentioned thought of drowning is still there in the back of your mind. Untimately unsatisfying.

A weak, tangled plot dims the shine of two fairly enjoyable sparring partners in this contrived novel of romantic suspense set in the high-stakes arena of black-market arms and art. Rafaella Holland, wealthy, shapely, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter with a powerful karate kick, goes undercover at a Caribbean resort owned by the gangster who seduced and discarded her besotted mother many years before. Rafaella is his daughter. When her mother is hit by a car owned by the gangster's estranged wife, Rafaella decides to expose him for the snake he is. Charming her way into the resort, she runs up against the manager Marcus Devlin (actually a good guy working for U.S. Customs), whom she instantly distrusts and immediately beds. The pair dodge bullets, bicker and try to unmask each other while a mysterious third party makes repeated attempts on her father's life.

In an unusual move, author Catherine Coulter has updated mystery-romance-suspense novel that first came out in 1990 and she makes good on her promise that "I'm going to have you turning pages so fast you could compete in the Indy 500."
