This honest, sobering look at the experience of a young doctor during his training process is representative of the intern year of many physicians. The author spares no details during a time when the medical field resembled a closed-door fraternity. The book is so edgy that it was written under a pseudonym to protect the career and safety of the author.

Anybody who wants to take a peek behind the veil of the medical field would do well to read this book. Somebody considering a career as a physician should certainly read this book and many other accounts like it. Dr. X broke the barrier that prevented doctors from honestly airing their grievances about the training process and sharing this process with the patients they serve.

This book was written in the 1960's, so the technology, drugs, and some other terminology are somewhat outdated. However, the general themes, and sadly, the training process, are strikingly similar to the current climate of medical training. A fantastic book.
