I like submarine movies. Don't ask me why. Something about people in vessels navigating through deadly environments appeals to me, it may explain why I also like SF involving spaceships... But enough of that. I recently rewatched the movie "Das Boot", and my spouse got a bug, found this book, and suggested I try it. Military autobiography is totally out of my preferred genres, but it is fascinating. It's more of a "what I did" account rather than "how I felt" account. Because of that (and as an American) I couldn't come up with a lot of empathy for Werner or his men, but despite the rather matter-of-fact prose you still get a really good idea of just how wretched it must have been down there. The slow realization they were losing, and what might happen... very interesting account.
