brilliant historical fiction from prolific writer chris bohjalian. i didn't think i'd be that interested in the civil war but this story hits a home run.the depth of the relationships between a southern woman and her freed slaves and her young niece and the vermont captain whom she cares for after he loses a leg and fingers in battle and their dance of both intimacy and humanity is breathtakingly beautiful. a must read for anyone who cares about humanity and the potential for peace in our country and world.
