At 45 Ben Powers finds his 20-year marriage on the rocks and his once brilliant career as a television writer washed up. Ben invites Penny to accompany hi for the weekend to the Long Island estate of an old friend, Nort, with whom his life has been intertwined since childhood days on Janus Island, off the Florida Keys. Nort, who is verging on paranoia, regards Penny with hostility and suspicion.
From a life of repeated and humiliating failures, Nort has devised one last scheme to recoup his prestige and self-assurance; convinced that several gold cannons were sunk off the coast of Janus Island during the 17th century, he has devised an elaborate plan to salvage them. Since the search must be conducted in great secrecy, a diversionary ploy will be created in the form of a documentary film about a s scientifically conducted t treasure hunt. The first few days on the island seem idyllic, but as the search progresses badly, Nort becomes more psychotic and the action more frantic till final shocking climax is reached.
