Albert Nolan, a South African priest, writes this book with a strong slant to liberation theology. I liked the thematic focus of each chapter, which makes it very easy to read and follow. This is a good supplemental text in the field of Christology. The Christology professor I had in seminary recommended this book, even though I would say that his theological viewpoint is certainly not in the realm of liberation theology. This professor's recommendation attests to the broad appeal of Nolan's written and the contribution this makes to the field of Christology. Having been a missionary in South America, I can certainly relate to Nolan's observation and point of view. I recently set this book to a young man in prison who I am guiding through a self-study of Catholic theology. Other books I would highly recommend in Christology include the classic Jesus the Christ by Cardinal Walter Kasper.

I was so stunned to read the one-star review that I had to write. Above anything I have ever read, this book changed my life. It was a clarion call for we who say we are Christians to wake up and absorb the radically uncomfortable messages of the real Jesus, Jesus the Jew, the Jesus who existed before the apostles hit the road to create the belief systems and institutions that undergird Christianity. His profound messages speak of love for the dispossessed, the exploited, the forgotten, and challenge our rationalizations about why we deserve to enjoy such cushy lives without thinking twice about our impact elsewhere in the world. If you want to learn, and to grow deeply and broadly in your faith and in its expression in the world, read this book. But be warned: you may feel a strong pull to radically change your own life -- for the sake of others.
