In 1929 he traveled to London, where, during the next 17 years, he furthered his political education, observed his oppressors or their home ground, and came to understand the people who mistakenly considered their civilization a model for all mankind.
Upon his return to Kenya in 1946, he put his training and experience to the test. Under his leadership the Kenyan tribes united in the quest for independence and maintained their resistance as Britain responded with boot and bayonet, concentration camp and curfew. Even throughout nine years of imprisonment this charismatic man remained the figurehead of Kenyan nationalism.
In 1961, Jomo Kenyatta regained his freedom and went on to become one of the most revered and respected national leaders of the Third World -- the man who led Kenya out of slavery and into the 20th century.« less
