While I wanted to like this book (being into books with a supernatural element), I didn't finish it. The writer's style is interesting and florid. But he overuses similes to the point of pretentiousness. (He compares a new shipmates: "like confused cherubs or corn-fed angels ashore in Rome." Or when one of the crew comes on deck "like a priest investing a new house or enterprise.") I felt "like a high school student forced to plow through a book he didn't enjoy." The story I managed to wade through was interesting, centered on a Coast Guard cutter stationed in Maine. As a Navy vet I understood most of the ship jargon, but others might struggle with it. Disappointing.
