The authors: Michael J. Berger, J.D. and Marc D. Iorio, J.D make the readers well aware of the fact that virtually all cases in a court of law can have very unpredictable outcomes. That is, the cases can go either way. For this reason, the book is instructional in fashion and allows the reader to interact by applying critical thinking skills along with their understanding of the law, the use of their common sense, and the knowledge of right and wrong to make their own decisions on the real cases presented throughout the chapters. In general, the readers are prompted to read the facts for each case and keep an open mind while considering both sides of the argument. Moreover, the readers will have the ability to compare their verdicts with those of real judges. Ultimately, the authors concentrate on actual cases to teach the reader about the law through presentation and application of famous and interesting cases in the realm of American Jurisprudence. I am the Judge presents real life fact patterns as well as hypothetical situations for readers to consider and debate. The readers will be given the opportunity to predict the outcomes for each case based on what they believe the law should be. Right or wrong, readers will learn and apply the law using thoughtful analysis. The hypothetical situations and fact patterns are presented in two formats: First, cases are discussed and questions that attorneys and judges might ask, to help them understand the legal issues at hand, are posed in the COMMENTARY and MORAL LESSON sections. Second, hypothetical situations are posed in a different setting using different scenarios to analyze entertaining make-believe situations based on the factual cases presented throughout the book. A few of the cases presented in this book are so recent that no legal decision has yet been made about them. This allows the reader with the unique opportunity of being the first to make a decision. Additionally, there are many instances of light humor to make the learning more entertaining and enjoyable. As a final outcome, the reader should understand that the law is largely based on precedent. Thus, the reader will see that precedent is set by the rulings made by judges on previous cases. That is, judges are bounded by prior decisions in similar cases. This helps the reader, in their everyday life, to have a real understanding and sense of what the law is. I am the Judge is instructional, controversial, and entertaining. A great choice for the reader!
