Powerful!
"Keep a journal," she says. Yes, well I read some poetry then I write some poetry I read some Sylvia Plath and then some Adrienne Rich And she reminds me of Ani D. Or maybe the recollection - the atlas of a troubled world Ani's 9-11 poem - plus Steinbeck She reminds me of Steinbeck Talking so much about agriculture and the coast Artichokes and oceans Ani would be The Grapes of Wrath along with Rage Against the Machine "The Ghost of Tom Joad" and the Indigo Girls whose album had to be censored this year They must have said something too angry or true for the straight, white children to hear. Shame on them...oh, the "f" word Cartman says, "It's just a word, b***h." The "f" word, - well, it's harmless Like a bullet with no gun No harm, no fun Words can be weapons Like a war within a breath, a mark on a page A scene and a stage Words might wound like words might kill And even in death they won't lie still. I am struck by these thoughts Surging forward to join the stream of disjointed consciousness That courses through pounding muscle Feeding the buzz of electrochemical activity That sustains the biology That is the subject and the object of all this awe and wonder The lover and the beloved Thinker of these thoughts that wake me up at night Sit me up and send me shivering out to look at the frosting night sky Smoking Thinking The only true culture shock Would be to remove the culture block Ungag Unblind Unlie Uncover Undelete Whatever we do, it might be too late To undo this undoing To unlearn this hate To reverse the process To unalienate To undivide and unsubtract To uncombine And to unreact. |
