Removing Kindle Content

All books you purchase are automatically backed up on Amazon.com. When you remove a book from your Kindle, it appears in your Archived Items.

Note that if you wish to permanently remove a book so that it will no longer appear in your Archived Items please see Managing Your Kindle on Amazon.com.

And I just tested this: I deleted a book I already read from my machine, and it immediately appeared in this folder which is at the very end of your list of books on the machine. So if I want to read it again, I can download it. In fact, I had a folder with books I read in it but I don't need it now that I have figured this out.

I got a Kindle for my birthday (yay mom and dad! and DH for telling them the right one lol) anyway, I'm just now reading my first book on it. 

Is there a way I can get it to show the page number that corresponds to the print book?  I'm going to get one of my text books on my Kindle for next semester and when they give reading assignments they sometimes give it by page number instead of by chapter.  Right now it says location 205-15 and I have no idea what that means.

I would check with Amazon Kindle support. They generally are pretty responsive.

There's no standard calculation for locations vs page numbers. If you keep the same font size throughout your reading of the book, then you can determine the location number of the last page, and find the paper book on Amazon to get the page count, and do a rough calculation from that. If the paper book is 800 pages long and there are 4000 locations at font size 2, then ... well, you can do the math. I have not done this -- been 2 years since my last class -- but this is what I see on the Amazon Kindle forums. Kindle CS may have a better answer (be sure you call Kindle CS and not Amazon CS). 

I haven't looked it up but I'm told that the Chicago Manual of Style or whatever other manual your school wants you to use when citing references does have a convention for the Kindle, should you need to do a formal citation. 

Another option for citing is to locate a paper copy of the book or find it on Google books and find the page number that way for citation. 

Kindle newbies: 

If you need to contact Customer Service about your Kindle: 

• First, call Kindle CS, not Amazon CS. 
• You're more likely to talk to someone who has a neutral American accent if you call during business hours and during the week. Late night calls tend to be handled by overseas CS, and they're perfectly nice and helpful, but sometimes quite difficult to understand, especially if you're older or have a bit of a hearing loss or a lousy cell connection. 
• The Call Me feature is excellent and I've never had it fail. https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/contact-us/kindle-help.html?ie=UTF8&nodeId=200375430&type=email&mode=&skip=true#a     When you say Call Me Now -- they call you now! 
• Talking with them on the phone is more effective than email if you've got a question or problem. Email works, but at least half the time they'll suggest that you call them, so I just cut to the chase and call them. 
• If the answer you receive is not satisfactory or if you do not understand, ask to speak to another CS person or a supervisor. They don't get huffy with you about this and the one time I had to do this, my problem was solved in exactly 3 seconds. 

If your Kindle book is not satisfactory, if there are many formatting errors or if, oh say you thought you were downloading Christian fiction and instead it's a heavy-duty erotica book that you find offensive, or you thought the book was erotica and instead it's preachy CF, call Kindle CS within 7 days and they'll refund your account. Same thing if you accidentally download the book instead of the sample. Call them. Get the refund. Be aware that there have been rare cases in which people were downloading books, keeping them 6 days, reading them, and then returning them for refund, and Amazon was no more happy about that than Kohl's would be if you bought a dress on Friday and returned it on Monday with cocktail stains and a tear in the hem, telling them that the dress didn't fit. :-) One guy got his account yanked after he'd returned something like 5 television sets (returned after Super Bowls etc), a number of video recorders (after graduation day), a bunch of digital cameras, some iThings, and pretty much everything else he'd bought from Amazon. Moron.

Kindle tip - If you are flying with your Kindle, you may be asked by the flight attendants to turn it off. If you don't know how to do this, check the manual for your specific model. I think basically you slide the "power" button and hold it until the screen goes blank. For the Kindle3 this takes about 7 seconds. I searched and found for the DX it should only take about 4 seconds.

I just saw this news article about Amazon offering refunds for one of the Kindle cases it sells. Thought I would post it here.

You do need to know how many total pages are in the printed copy but that's easily found by checking Goodreads.com or Amazon.com   :)  Hope this is helpful!

There's a thread on Amazon's Kindle forum with tips for newbies. I picked a few. I have not corrected their grammar, and they're in random order, but maybe they'll be helpful to someone. I hope the formatting isn't unbearably annoying. 

• Use gift cards to set a budget every month on book buying. It is just so easy to over spend since it is so easy to shop. The dreaded One-Click Syndrome. 

• Watch for posts from Happy Reader Joyce at the Amazon Kindle forum for the best free books.

• Read the manual. Lots of your questions are answered there.

• Bufo Calvin is THE guru at the Amazon Kindle forum; Bufo's advice can be trusted.

• Keep your Kindle in sleep mode rather than turning it off unless you're not going to use it for an extended period of time.

• Don't forget that you can cash in your change at some Coinstar machines for Amazon GCs. No fee when you get a GC! Oh, also sign up for swagbucks to easily earn a little free $$ for books.

• Download Calibre. It's free software that will help you organize and maintain your library - both Amazon purchases and non-Amazon purchases. You can add information about series, publication date, etc. You can change the way titles display on your Kindle. It's much easier to start with only a few books than to discover it later and have to add and have to organize several hundred books all at once! You can also set it to download free versions of many newspapers. http://calibre-ebook.com/

• When in doubt, hit the Menu key...even if you are already in a menu. It's like right-clicking in Windows: what it does is give you more choices.

• Remember that you can read a sample of book before deciding to buy. Samples are my virtual book pile. When someone recommends a book or I read an article, I download the sample.

• Remember to turn 3g, wireless OFF when not in use to save battery life.

• Download the .pdf file of the User's Guide to your computer. It's much easier to navigate the .pdf version when you're still unfamiliar with how to navigate the ereader itself.

• If your battery charge is dropping way too fast, especially if you put it to sleep with a good amount of charge and "it wakes up dead", check for something stuck indexing. When you load books onto the Kindle, it indexes every word to speed up searches in the future; when you load a bunch of books (or several of those "The Entire Works of ..."), you may want to plug the device in overnight for that reason. But if it totally saps your battery, do this: search for a nonsense string by going Home and typing zvmcx, toggle one right to 'search my items'. If it comes back "No items" -- indexing is not your problem. If it says "X items indexing" click that line to see the name of the book(s), go to home/find it/delete or remove from device, and reload it from your Archives. Wait awhile and check again.

• If you also got an Amazon leather, hinged, NON-lighted cover with your Kindle 3 -- be on the alert for these symptoms: Short battery/charge life not fixed by paragraph above. Not keeping place in books. Spontaneous re-booting (boy on hill, etc). "Freezing" (buttons unresponsive, page stuck on one image). If any of these happen more than once or twice, remove from the Amazon cover and call CS to see about returning and getting credit for the cover. The LIGHTED cover is not a problem, only the unlighted.

i'm looking for an image of the kindle non-lighted cover.  is the hinge metal?  (hinges to me are metal.)

i'm trying to figure out if i have the cover in question or not.   mine is definitely non-lighted.  now i'm worried.

Paula, from what I understand, only a certain percentage of the covers have been causing problems, but the ones that do, sure do. The people who are having trouble have been pulling their hair out, some of them getting 4 and 5 replacement Kindles, thinking that they're getting bad ereaders. Frustrating for them! I think it took so long to figure out because most of the covers don't do it.

I'm going to add a couple of my own to that list I posted yesterday. 

Don't pay for Kindle how-to books. Everything you need to know is either in the instruction manual or on some forum or blog - free. I Love My Kindle is a useful blog, for example, and there are others. Don't pay for a book that tells you where to find free books. We've provided all kinds of links here and they're free. Inkmesh is one favorite, Books on the Knob is reliable. Ereaderiq is pretty amazing. Daily Cheap Reads also brings to the front inexpensive books you might overlook. Mobileread forums is a wealth of information and they're usually pretty patient with newbies. (There are a few jerks no matter where you go.) 

After you've had your Kindle for a few weeks, go back and read the directions again. You'll find features or shortcuts that you overlooked or did not fully understand the first time.

To permanently delete a book you don't want to even have to see the title of. Warning. This will permanently delete it from not just your Kindle but also your Archives and you'll have to buy it again if you change your mind. You are warned. 

• Sign in to your account on Amazon,
• Go to Manage Your Kindle,
• Then Your Orders. 
• Find the title of the book.
• Just to the left of the title you will see a plus sign +.
• Click it. 
• In the lower right-hand corner of the window that appears, you'll see a button marked "Delete this title". 
• Click it and confirm. It's gone forever, and if you change your mind (fat chance of that, the ones I've deleted) you'll have to buy it again. 

All this takes much less time to do than it did to read it. 

I have found over the years a number of cheapies and discounted books or new and interesting books that didn't make the list on places like Books on the Knob, ereaderiq, Kindle Reader, etc., by looking at Amazon's list of 100 Movers and Shakers for Kindle morning and evening. The list is updated hourly, and if something starts flying off the shelves, it makes it to the list. Also, books that are discussed on NPR, morning TV shows, The Daily Show, and such often make this list. You might want to look it over a few times over the next week or so and see if it's a page you'd like to bookmark. You can see all your Kindle content and send downloads to your registered Kindles or Kindle applications from the "Your Orders" section of the Manage Your Kindle page.

Is there a page on Amazon of our Kindle purchases that has LINKS to the actual book page descriptions?

I found a page of my Kindle purchases, but there are no corresponding links. Just a list of the titles. So If I want to read the eBook description, I have to copy & paste the title in to do a Search. I want to be able to peruse through my eBooks and click on the link to read the book description without all the copying & pasting.
