This was my first McDermott book, and I had been wanting to read one for awhile. This will be my last McDermott book as well. I really had to push myself to finish it.
Could there be two more unlikable fictional characters than Nina and her husband Eddie? Nina, the world's most famous archaeologist, is the most unprofessional and whiny woman ever. Eddie has the maturity level of a 15-year-old.
The story is a fast-paced romp covering much of the globe. It's over the top, which I expected, but I would have preferred more background especially about the compound in Argentina. Where the story wasn't skimpy on detail or page count was the train chase. That lasted forever and I skimmed it.
