I really like this series and the character Samuel Craddock. I didn't know who was the killer until the very end. I didn't like this one quite as much as the first but I liked it a lot and I want to read all the books in this series! It has some humor, tragedy, mystery, and fun.

Second in the series. Disabled veteran Jack Harbin is taken care of by his father, who suddenly dies of a heart attack. In the small town of Jarrett Creek TX there are always neighbors to step up, although Jack has not been the easiest guy to get along with. Retired Chief Craddock helps out some too, but when Jack is brutally murdered and the current chief is out on an alcoholic bender, the town council asks Craddock to investigate. There are a lot of secrets in this small town - Craddock thought as sheriff he knew most of them, but it wasn't so. Craddock is a great character, I think some of the supporting cast need a little more depth and the alcoholic sheriff feels way over the top. I like the small town a lot though, this reminds me a lot of Steven Havill's Posadas County mysteries. Shames gives us some clues and some red herrings, nicely plotted. It is written in first-person present tense, which does bother me occasionally, but not a big deal.
