Robert Crais has a talent for creating characters, and by extension, his stories, by building small piece by small piece, and thereby creating a coherent whole. Every book, in the Elvis Cole series, beginning with "Monkey's Raincoat", has followed this pattern. in "The Last Detective" there is, perhaps, more introspection for both of the lead characters, Elvis Cole and Joe Pike, than in any of the previous books in the series. It's like Crais said to himself before he started on this one, "I'm creating a story that will really flesh out everything the readers know about these guys, and expand on it". If that was his intention, he is extraordinarily successful. The story is deep, and engrossing, well told, almost mesmerizing in parts.
James Daniels is the perfect embodiment for the Elvis Cole character - so believable. I'm now listening to "The Forgotten Man", and it just keeps getting better.
Because of the way Crais builds his characters, block by block, I would advise to start this series at the beginning. Crais repeats very little information learned from the earlier books, he really keeps it to a minimum, so if you start in the middle, you'll miss some key points about the characters.
I'm so glad I discovered Crais, he's up there with the best of them; happy reading!
