I grew up in Leadville and my father was a miner...although not a gold or silver miner, but molybedenum from up the road a bit in Climax. I lived on the east side of town surrounded on all sides by tall hills of mine "dumps"...piles of dirt left over after the ore was removed. All the old mines from the 1800's were just up the street. Reading what the miners went through and how the history of this neat old town unfolded was very gratifying. I just wish I had known all of it when I lived there. As usual though, one never appreciates what they've got til it's gone! I lived in not only a historically rich area, but one with natural beauty beyond measure....with the two highest mountains in Colorado looming over every day of our lives...piercingly blues skies, mountain meadows awash in wildflowers, air beyond pure with a smell all it's own. Yep, almost heaven on earth!
