In her first book "Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight: An African Childhood, she introduces her family's outlandish personalities, eccentricities, and quirks.

The timeline in "Leaving Before the Rains Come," is about her marriage and eventual divorce. During this part of her life, she writes about accepting ownership for her mouth and mind.

What does she mean? Like her parents, Alexandra is intelligent, outspoken, and keenly aware of her privilege. She writes with a "this is all about me" tone and seems to disregard her husband's feelings. To unravel her emotions and reactions about her marriage, she must be selfishly focused.

Her comparisons to living in the United States to South Africa are fascinating.

She is an excellent writer and I'm excited to read "Cocktail House under the Tree of Forgetfulness next.
