Interpretation.—All the studies that have been named heretofore, are preparatory to the task of getting at the meaning of the Sacred Scriptures. This task is the function of the science called Interpretation, or Hermeneutics, from Ipiveuca As to the principle of Interpretation, it is to be remarked: 1. That the general principles on which any writings would be interpreted are applicable here, and the general principles are embraced in what is called " General Hermeneutics." 2. That the special character of the sacred writings, as sacred, gives rise to additional principles of interpretation, belonging to what is called "Sacred Hermeneutics." a. When we seek the sense of Scripture simplyby the aid of Philology and Grammatical Criticism, our interpretation is called " Grammatical." Religion, which has been very favorably received in North America. This Treatise on the Canon is avowedly compiled from the previous labors of the most eminent critics, especially Bishop Cosin'-s 'Scholastic History of the Canon of the Old Testament,' and the ample collections of the impartial and indefatigable Dr. Lardner and the learned Jeremiah Jones. The first part of Dr. Alexander's treatise discusses the Canon of the Old Testament. In the second part are considered the Canon of the New Testament, and the reasons for which the Apocryphal Books are deservedly rejected from the sacred Canon.
