I held my breath, wondering if this conclusion to the Pennyroyal Green saga was going to do the entire series justice. Frankly, that's a hard act to follow. I'm not a fan of overlong series in general (four novels is long enough, but eleven? Com' on.) I may have passed on one or two, but for the most part, I enjoyed every one I did read. Now, the end for the fabulously notorious Redmond and Eversea families is here, and the happy-ever-after this beautiful book cover promised (read my thoughts on the cover reveal here) came true.

All throughout the series, Olivia Eversea and Lyon Redmond's long history was hinted at, teasing readers with their love affair gone wrong as Olivia smothered her private hurt while Lyon ran off to parts unknown--and remained gone for five agonizing years. With his return, I finally learned the intricate details of their clandestine love and the shocking events that led to their rift. This time they're older, wiser, stronger, yet still chafing from unfinished business while secretly holding onto a very small nugget of hope. Since Lyon doesn't do anything by halves, their reunion became an adventure overflowing with tension, anger, desire, lost dreams, and heartbreak. Everything came out in the wash allowing the magic to flow back in. And how beautiful it was. For the record, I lost count of how many tears I shed.

Still, there is that little matter of Olivia's upcoming wedding to address, and romance fans with a penchant for genealogy (like me) will certainly get a kick out of the special something at the end. Look, too, for the secret, private sorrow of Lyon's father. That heartbreak could have easily been the outcome for Lyon and Olivia.

So yes, Ms. Long, you did righteous. I forgive you for making me wait to the very long end, but you gave me a powerhouse finale that the Pennyroyal Green characters richly deserved. The Legend of Lyon Redmond was wildly romantic and as rousing as the culmination of the Lord of Rings movie series. Brava!
