I was moved to read this non-fiction, investigative account of the legend that there had been a female pope in the ninth century because I had stumbled on to a fictional account of the same subject. Highly intriguing and very well researched, this treatise reads easily and makes a convincing case that the legend in fact was reality.

The author approaches his 'proof' from various angles, and follows each thread as far as it will lead. He makes reasonable assumptions when necessary, but always follows the contrary assumption as well.

I enjoyed learning the factual details that do exist, and am glad to have read this church-teasing account.
