A major motion picture, LES LIAISONS DANGERIUSES, is the author's most important work of fiction-a controversial bestseller in its own time. First published in 1782, the novel was an immediated success although it scandalized the French aristocracy with its merciless expose of the degeneracy and debauchery behind their polished facade of manners and modes.

Laclos uses a web of secual intrigue to reveal the fundamental antagonisms underlying society. The conflict between men and women is reprosented in its most ruthless form by the Vicomte de Valmont and the Marquise de Merteuil, a worldly pair of ex-lovers who attempt to destroy a young, innocent couple. Valmont seduces the young bride-to-be and Madame de Merteuil seduces her fiance, jeopardizing the couple's future.

This book was made into two movies in recent time VALMONT and LES LIAISONS DANGEREUSES, both very well done.
