"The author . . . addresses the subject of death with extraordinary grace and dignity. Her book, which begins and ends from an adult point of view, traces a Japanese woman's backward journey to a painful time in her life." --Starred, Publishers Weekly

A wonderful book about a grieving young girl, Chiaki. Due to the unexpected death of her father, her mother is forced to work and they move to a new home where an older neighbor, Mrs. Yanagi, offers to watch Chiaki. Mrs. Yanagi is initailly frightening to young Chiaki but is guided through her grief under the caring eye of this loving stranger. I loved this book.
