This was a very good book. (I read it twice!) A teenager named Wayne kills his parents after years of abuse while his brother calmly eats breakfast. What makes this book unique is that it is written 17 years after the murders, by a man who actually knew Wayne at the time of the crime; so not only do we get to follow Wayne's life for the next 17 years, but we also get to know him on a deeper level. Yes, the crime was terrible, but we feel compassion for Wayne as he tries to run away time after time, only to be returned to his sadistic parents. His was a hopeless life of endless cruelty. He truly felt he had no other way out.
